The Smiley Face water tower in Makanda, Illinois, underwent a recent facelift that included a salute to the late US Senator Paul Simon, who hailed from that town. The Buncombe Public Water District commemorated Simon by painting one of his signature bow ties under the grin, according to the Southern Illinoisan.
Smiley Face Water Towers continue to survive in many communities, and a few even sport bow ties. But this is the first Smiley Face water tower honoring a politician. (Thanks to Emily Priddy for the tip) [11/08/2004]
