Wally's Service Station and Mayberry Courthouse
Mount Airy, North Carolina
This is a key pilgrimage site for fans of the Andy Griffith Show and its TV town of Mayberry. Wally's Service Station, featured prominently in the series (it's where Goober worked) is a former real gas station, built in 1937 and converted into a tourist attraction in 2001. Andy, who lived nearby as a boy, would reportedly walk to the station to grab a snack or a bottle of pop; modern-day tourists are encouraged to do likewise.
Next door to Wally's is the Mayberry Courthouse. It is not the TV series courthouse, which was part of a Hollywood studio backlot (Mayberry isn't real, you know). But the building has been modified to resemble it -- a surprisingly faithful recreation complete with jail cells and Sheriff Andy's office, where visitors are encouraged to put their feet up on the desk just like Andy did.
Out behind the two buildings, tucked under some trees, is the rustic Darling Family hillbilly cabin (another Andy Griffith Show location), complete with what appears to be a moonshine still off to one side.
