Where Teddy Roosevelt Learned McKinley Had Been Shot
Isle La Motte, Vermont
On September 6, 1901, Vice-President Teddy Roosevelt was a guest at the home of Lt. Gov. Nelson Fisk, prepping to be the main speaker at the annual meeting of the Vermont Fish and Game League. That's when he received news that President William McKinley had been shot. McKinley died eight days later, Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States, and his speaking schedule became a lot more hectic.
In 2008, the state of Vermont flagged this noteworthy spot with a historical marker.
