Terry Fox: Prosthetic Leg Dipped Here

St. John's, Newfoundland

Sculpted by Luben Boykov, a larger-than-life Terry Fox was unveiled in April 12, 2012, 32 years to the day after he dipped his prosthetic leg into St. John's Harbor at the start of his planned run across Canada. Only a small group of people witnessed Terry's first steps in 1980, but he hoped that his Marathon of Hope would draw ever-increasing publicity, and that he would raise $24 million for cancer research by the time he reached the Pacific.

Terry died en route, which somehow made his effort more memorable. It eventually led to hundreds of millions in donations, this spot in St. John's being renamed "Terry Fox Mile 0," and this bronze statue. A second, different bronze Terry stands on the West Coast to mark the destination that he never reached.
