Newfoundland Stars in Bronze
St. John's, Newfoundland
St. John's was designated a Cultural Capital of Canada in 2006, so in 2008 Newfoundland artist Morgan MacDonald unveiled this 12-foot-high bronze sculpture on George Street, the city's entertainment center. It celebrates some of the province's best-known artists. Among them: accordion pioneer Wilf Doyle, master of Newfoundland jigs, reels, and quadrilles; guitar-playing Ron Hynes, "man of 1,000 songs" including "Sonny's Dream" (named the 41st Greatest Canadian Song of All Time by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation); and comedian Tommy Sexton, who wrote the film "Adult Children of Alcoholics: the Musical," and the play, "Cod on a Stick."
