Air and Space Museum: Spacesuits and Underwear
Cahokia, Illinois
The astronaut suits of Gus Grissom and Gordo Cooper not only survived the rigors of space travel, they also survived earthly floods in 1986 and 1993 that destroyed two previous versions of this museum. This one opened in 2005 and thus far has remained dry.
St. Louis was where a number of the early NASA space capsules were built, and one of the most prized exhibits at the Greater St. Louis Air and Space Museum is the golf cart in which President Kennedy toured the capsule factory. The space suits and underwear of Grissom and Cooper also occupy a showcase of honor. The museum believes that the shiny silver Grissom suit was the one he wore in the famous Mercury 7 "Right Stuff" photograph.
