Deer Crossing, Maze of Enchantment: Enchanted Highway
Regent, North Dakota
Deer Crossing, sculpted by Gary Greff, features two giant deer, in stark metal cutout form, leaping over an immense fence.
The buck is 75 feet tall, and the doe tops out at 50 feet. They were built out of scrap metal from used oil well tanks, which Gary first rolled flat with a bulldozer. He had to cut the legs off of the buck while moving it down the Enchanted Highway, because they would have otherwise knocked down the Highway's telephone poles.
Multiple cranes were needed to lift the nearly seven-ton sculptures into place on September 9, 2002.
An bonus walk-thru "Maze of Enchantment," also made of flattened scrap metal, was added in 2008.
The deer are the first sculpture encountered while driving south on the Enchanted Highway, and serve as a cautionary reminder to travelers to watch out for wayward fence-leaping wildlife.
