Richmond, Virginia - Hollywood Cemetery Pyramid

We visited this today, and it's truly a sight to behold. It's a little tricky to get to, and the gatekeeper was closing up shop, but he let us go look at it for a few minutes. I walked right through an icy spot [of air], but when I turned around, it was gone... oh well. [Tiffany, 12/10/2007]

Richmond, Virginia - Hollywood Cemetery (Pyramid)

This is a beautiful cemetery full of history and art. I loved riding around and looking at the dates on the stones. According to a local "ghost hunter," the Pyramid is supposed to have a lot of "supernatural" activity around it. It is said that in one corner at the base of the pyramid you can actually feel "ice cold" spots, which are apparently areas where spirits reside. There is also a crypt in the cemetery that is home to a local vampire. [Janie, 07/04/2004]

The Pyramid. Richmond, Virginia - Hollywood Cemetery - Pyramid

While in Richmond recently, I decided to check out Hollywood Cemetery. It's a really beautiful old place. Lots of hills, curving roads, and ornate tombstones and statues. There is indeed a cast iron statue of a dog guarding the grave of a child, but the inscription on the stone was so old and weathered that I couldn't read it.

The "weird Confederate pyramid" mentioned in a previous tip is HUGE and made out of giant chunks of rock. I'm guessing here, but based on some pictures I took with people standing near it, it looks like it's at least fifty feet tall. It was built in 1869 in a section of the cemetery that has over eighteen thousand Confederate graves. [Dean Jeffrey, 09/28/2001]

To the Confederate Dead. Richmond, Virginia - Weird Confederate Pyramid

Hollywood Cemetery is certainly an interesting place. It's a really cool place to have a picnic and take some black and white pictures. Jeff Davis, James Monroe, and John Tyler are buried there. The best parts, though, are this massive stone pyramid erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy, and this cast-iron statue of a dog guarding the grave of a baby. [Conner, 09/08/2000]
