Pyramid Lake, Nevada -
George Washington Rock Pile

Some people believe that this lumpy, lonely pile of rock is an astonishing likeness of our first President.

Address:
Hwy 445, Pyramid Lake, NV
Directions:
I-80 exit 18 and drive north on Pyramid Hwy, following the signs, for around 30 miles. At lake, head north along the west side on Hwy 445. The road goes to a good dirt road in a bit. Halfway up the west shore, there are some ranches. Keep looking just to the right (east) of the road for the isolated rock formation. It's a big weird rock. Drive past a half mile or so, and look back.

George Washington Rock Formation

On the way to the "Needles" hot springs and geysers on the north end of Pyramid Lake, we stopped along the dirt road for a break. An old timer stopped to see if we were OK, as it's pretty remote out here. We were next to this huge rock formation on the west side of the lake. After assuring him we were fine, he told us to drive a mile down the road, and to look back at the rock. "Huh"? "It's George Washington!" he said. "Hmmmm, been out in these hills too long" we figured. So we drove down the road a bit, then looked back! WOW! A perfect bust of our first president! About a hundred feet high. We were blown away! Pyramid Lake is a neat place to visit besides this feature. It is north of Reno, Nevada. The hiway leaves from I-80, right next to the Nugget in Sparks, the "Pyramid Hiway". [John, 12/16/2000]
