Buford, Wyoming: Smallest Town In America

Boasting on the town limits sign its population of 1, Buford is a single house, gas station and post office. It's also the highest spot for a town along the entire span of I-80. Sold in 2012 by resident Don Sammons, reopened with a Phin Deli by new Vietnamese owner.

Super nice owner, great visit. Took the back dirt road to get there, scenic route, decent roads.

Buford, 2014. Smallest Town In America

The town has reopened! The service station is now a Phin Deli franchise, which the employees told me is a Vietnamese coffee chain. The new owners come over to visit a few times a year. Don Sammons is, according to the employees, still managing the place. I bought a pound of Phin Deli coffee and a signed copy of Don's book, "Buford One."

[Mindy, 05/28/2014]

It's still named Buford, though one new sign proclaims "Welcome to Phin Deli Town!"

The guy who owned the truck stop sold it; the store is closed as of right now but still worth a stop.

Buford, Wyoming: Population = 1. It's also the highest town between New York City and San Francisco on I-80.

The businesses have been closed since April, when the single resident sold the town. But the sign and structures remain, ready for a new sole inhabitant.

Buford town limits sign. Smallest Town In America

Population 1, Buford is the smallest town in the US. There is a single house and a gas station, it was closed when we stopped. It didn't look like it had been opened in awhile which is a shame because we would have bought a Buford magnet.

[Amy Seagrove, 03/21/2012]

Buford just went up for sale this year -- its lone owner/inhabitant was ready to retire somewhere inhabited. Buford is right along I-80, though sometimes gets cut off during harsh winter blizzards. Another Wyoming town, Lost Springs, lost its "smallest" title when it became wildly popular and mushroomed from 1 resident to 4.
