Hyattsville, Maryland: Library with Flying Saucer

An otherwise unremarkable 1960s library had a large flying saucer above its entrance. It didn't just accidentally look like a flying saucer -- it was designed to be a flying saucer. Demolished in 2018, replaced by a new library and flying saucer in 2021.

Library with Flying Saucer

This library has been undergoing renovation for several years and is slated to reopen sometime this year. The temporary location for lending is decidedly less exciting.

A lesser saucer, sadly. But at least the library built a new one.

Hyattsville Branch Library

This 1960s "Jet Age" branch library looks like a flying saucer! The flying saucer has legs that stretch down and form a canopy that shields the main entrance in a rather novel way. Such a whimsical piece of architecture is in a place that would not generally be described as whimsical.
