Danville, Virginia: Last Capitol of the Confederacy

Danville was capital of the Confederacy for several days, just before Robert E. Lee's surrender on April 10, 1865. Reb prez Jefferson Davis stayed in the Sutherlin Mansion, now an arts and history museum, and his last cabinet meeting was held here. Historical marker out front.

The room where Jefferson Davis slept can be visited as part of the Last Capitol of the Confederacy.

Davis was on the run at that point -- although he still slept comfortably -- so Danville was only the Confederate Capitol for a couple of days before the Civil War ended.
