Olney, Illinois - White Squirrel Town

If anyone doubts the existence of white squirrels in Olney, Illinois, they have but to rattle a wrapper such as a potato chip bag, etc, and they will see more of the squirrels that they would ever want to. They got so close to me that I thought the next move they would make is to run up my pant leg. They just kept coming closer and closer to the point that one was just a few inches from my foot. We didn't even have food to give them, they just came running at us thinking we might. They were really neat, but they freaked us out when they got so close. The community also has a pair of them in a cage so that all who visit can at least see one or two. I was told by an Olney resident that the squirrels are kept in the cage only a short time and then another is captured and given a turn in the cage. [D. DeMoulin, 08/03/1998]

Olney, Illinois - Mecca of Albino Squirrels

Upon reading your article about the White Squirrels, it seems that you may be a little doubtful if there are really White Squirrels living in Olney. I wanted to tell you that YES, there truly are. It is almost a known joke that when we bring someone into the area to show them the squirrels, they seem to disappear — but really, if you stick around awhile, you will find lots of them. They truly live in the Olney City Park, and other areas of town. North and South Elliott Street are good streets to stroll and look for the white squirrels, and also North Boone Street. There are many other areas in town — you just have to look for them. A couple of years back, my Aunt, who lives on East Locust, even had one coming to her patio door every day to eat from her hand!
