Edgar Allan Poe Slept Here

During Edgar Allan Poe's last years he dated three women, a Victorian version of a menage a troi. Sarah Whitman said no to a marriage proposal after he was caught drinking. Sarah Shelton was making wedding preparations when he died. Nancy Richmond was married and lived in the white house next to this marker. Poe came for an extended stay. They fell in love. He wrote love letters to her, calling her Annie. His poem, "Annie", was written for her. After Nancy's husband died she legally changed her name to Annie.
