Tuskegee Airmen Monument

I followed the signs to the Tuskegee Airmen Monument in Walterboro on June 2, 2023. It was not there. The tiny park commemorating the WW2 POW confinement was there but absolutely no sign of a Tuskegee Airmen monument. Where did it go?

[John Douglass, 06/10/2023]

The memorial was damaged by a lawnmower in Oct. 2022 and has been removed for repairs.

Tuskegee Airmen Monument

This monument, located near a still-functioning airfield, is dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen, an African-American group of fighter pilots in World War II. It's set in a tiny park that used to be part of a military base. The park also has signs explaining that German POWs were housed at the base from 1942 to 1945.

Tuskegee is in another state, but the Airmen were here, too. A historical marker at this site says that airfield was the "final training base for pilots prior to overseas duty."
