Westminster, Maryland: Important Civil War Bullet HolesOnly two, but they were from "Corbitt's Charge," a turning point in the Civil War in 1863, so they have their own sign. That makes them easy to spot!
- 299 E. Main St., Westminster, MD
- Intersection of Main St. and Hwy 32 across from the Sheetz gas station. Corbitt came charging down what is now Hwy 32, so the bullet holes are located directly across from where Hwy 32 intersects Main St.
Visitor Tips and News About Important Civil War Bullet Holes
The original tip indicates there is a sign on the building that points out the bullet holes. There is, but not a traditional hanging sign! It is simply stenciled white paint letters that have faded significantly over time. When standing at the historical marker looking across the intersection, you are probably looking right at them without seeing them. Once you find them though, they and the lettering are obvious! The house is the historical Trumbo/Chrest House and is marked with a historical plate on the front. The bullet holes are located on the SE facing wall.[Lora Wilson, 01/06/2013]
There are two bullet holes on the side of a building that are from the civil war. They are both historically significant because they are from Corbitt's Charge, which was a key turning point in the Civil War. There is a historic marker about Corbitt's Charge and the bullet holes are marked with a sign on the wall. Good spot for the history buffs....the historical society is not far away along with a cemetery filled with Civil War vets.[Robert Ryder, 12/14/2003]
