Test tube holding Edison's last breath.

Thomas Edison's Last Breath

Field review by the editors.

Dearborn, Michigan

Henry Ford believed that the human soul exited the body with its last breath. So it was with mixed feelings that we discovered this oddball artifact in Henry Ford's Museum & Greenfield Village.

Ford somehow convinced Thomas Edison's son to sit by the dying inventor's bedside, clamp a test tube over his mouth, then plug it with a cork. Maybe Ford's intentions were noble, and he expected future scientists to reconstitute Edison from the aether. Or -- maybe Henry just liked having Mr. Light Bulb dangling from his rear-view mirror.

January 2008: Tipster Gavin reports: "Edison's Last Breath has been moved to right inside the front door! It's easy to miss if you don't know where to look. It's inside the display case straight in front of you if you enter through the main entrance to the museum."
