Chopper Sky Kings Attain Immortality

A memorial was unveiled Sunday in Phoenix, Arizona, to four men who died exactly one year earlier when their news choppers collided while broadcasting a police chase of a stolen pickup truck. Craig Smith, Rick Krolak, Scott Bowerbank, and Jim Cox now belong to the exclusive fraternity of Sky Kings, men who crashed as they lived and will forever have nice monuments as a result.

An article in the Arizona Republic reports that the father of Jim Cox “had yet to see changes in any rules or regulations as a result of the helicopter crash,” but a preliminary report last August from the National Transportation Safety Board said that the helicopters were not flying erratically. There were, however, five different news choppers covering the chase, plus a police helicopter, so the skies were a little crowded.
