Sidney the Saloon Dog

Myton, Utah

Myton is a town of 500 in the middle of Nowheresville, Utah. But it does have one claim to fame -- the grave of Sidney the three-legged dog, one-time mascot of the Three Legged Dog Saloon.

Sidney belonged to the wife of the Saloon's owner, and was the principal reason that anyone visited Myton. By the time he died, Sidney had become so popular that he was buried out front, under the sidewalk, his grave marked with a tombstone. His obituary was printed in the Salt Lake City Tribune and the Deseret News.

The Saloon's owner, not wanting to see a good thing end, went out and found another three-legged dog. He named it Sam Shepherd and expected the party to keep on rolling. It didn't. Sam Shepherd died, the owner's marriage dissolved, and the Saloon went out of business. The building now houses the Myton Memories Museum, but Sidney's grave is still out front. And as long as Myton keeps the tombstone bolted down, people like us will visit.
