- Versailles, Kentucky - Abandoned Castle
The castle which burned down last year is now being rebuilt. They've had trucks coming in and out of the place. The owner I heard is building a two-story home in the same spot as the original Castle house. According to local newspapers, he is going to make the home resemble the original one as much as possible.
[Marie Eldridge, 03/22/2005] Photo from the day after the fire, about 8:30 pm, 24 hours after it started. Note the absent turrents in the center where the charred ruins are visible over the wall.
[wally, 05/12/2004]Versailles Castle burns in night fire
The interior of the castle in Versailles, Kentucky was destroyed in a blaze on Monday night, May 10, 2004. The cause was unknown, but may have been triggered by a lightning strike to a turret. The owner had been working on the buidling's air conditioning that day during a strong electrical thunderstorm. The fire was visible for miles, and traffic jammed on Versailles Road as passersby stopped to watch the demise of the local landmark.
The Castle, built over 30 years ago, had been owned by real estate developer Rex Martin until he died last August. It had been purchased last year by a florida couple for $1.8 milllion, who were turning it into a bed and breakfast. (Tips from Angela, Deborah, Mary Ann, Joe, Misty, Amy, Scott, and Karen)
[05/10/2004]- Versailles, Kentucky - Castle - The Straight Facts
Some of you guys need to get your facts straight. For the first year and a half of my life I lived with my parents, who were caretakers of the castle. While my mother was pregnant with me, and after, her and my dad helped build the castle. Most of my family have been caretakers before. I have pictures, video tapes and memories of the inside of the castle. It may have six bedrooms with their own bathrooms but it doesn't have indoor plumbing. And the biggest expense in the bedrooms are the styrofoam moldings they have around the doors. I have been really close to the owner, Rex Martin all of my life. For my first birthday, he got me a truck load of diapers, literally!

Fans of the Castle have been sending a steady stream of tips on the blaze, which broke out at about 8:30 pm on May 10. Local fire companies had trouble getting in close because of the ditches around the perimeter. It appears the outer battlements survived, but the central castle structure was destroyed. The Versailles Castle was built in the early 1970s by a real estate developer, and was purchased in 2003 by a Florida couple in the process of turning it into a bed and breakfast.
