In the film Easy Rider -- after leaving Ballarat, California -- Wyatt and Billy rode until dark on the way to Flagstaff. They asked for lodging here, and were denied when the owner turned on a neon "No Vacancy" sign.

- Cordes Junction, Arizona - Mystery Christmas Tree
The Mystery Christmas tree has not burned down. It is standing in the median just north of Sunset Point. Since the early to mid-1980s it has been decorated every year for Christmas. Around the time of Operation Desert Storm [1991] it began being decorated year-round with American flags and yellow ribbons. Purple ribbons were added to the flags and yellow ribbons (That could have been after the 19 "Hot Shots" firefighters lost their lives in Yarnell). These decorations remain year-long; new ones are added periodically as the harsh Arizona sun fades them and the winds blow them away.
No matter what time of year you travel I-17, it is worth seeing! I get chills every time I pass it.

- Flagstaff, Arizona - Lumberjack Muffler Man
The Lumberjack outside of the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Arizona was the victim of beer-soaked pranksters in February, 2004. I guess they cut him down by his ankles and beheaded him.

- Flagstaff, Arizona - Two Lumberjacks
There are two lumberjack muffler men -- one inside and one outside the Walkup Skydome stadium at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. (NAU's sports teams are nicknamed, curiously enough, the Lumberjacks). I have heard that both lumberjacks previously stood in front of The Lumberjack Cafe, which is now Granny's Closet, on Route 66 in Flagstaff.
[Martin Ince, 10/13/1997]Tipster Norm Richie comments: "We never called it a Muffler Man, but the one pictured for Tucson is a dead ringer for the one that sat in front of the Lumberjack Cafe in Flagstaff, AZ for years in the '60s." And "Crissy" writes: "My friends in Flagstaff explained to me that the college kids steal the axe from one of the muffler men every year as a prank of some sort."
When I went thru Flagstaff he was there right next to Granny's Closet. We had dinner at Granny's too.
[David Kamada, 05/29/2010]Seems to be a replacement of the old wood-carved woodsman. Perhaps this one is fiberglass?

The 1960s were such an intolerant time. Fun Fact: Bellemont claims to have the highest elevation of any community along Route 66.
