Arizona is nicknamed the "Copper State" as it is the largest producer of copper in the U.S. and has been for over 100 years. So it's a perfect tribute that the Arizona map on the monument is made of copper pennies.

Take the time to drive another ten miles north of the Clifton Jail and see one of the country's largest copper mines at Morenci, AZ. There is an overlook up route 191 about eight miles north of Clifton. Follow the signs, or ask anyone. The entire town is dedicated to the support of the mine. Tours and information are available at the Morenci Motel and Lounge.
