- Talullah, Louisiana - Delta Village
I remember going to Delta Village as a child in the very late 1960s or early 1970s. They had shops with great varieties of wine cheeses in big hoops, very fresh. But to me, the BEST attraction was a huge collection of antique, coin operated musical instruments in ornate handcrafted wood and glass arcade-type boxes. They had mechanical music instruments like horns and pianos and even a violin and guitars and banjos. I wish I knew what happened to those after Delta Village closed. They were incredible, and would be exceptionally valuable today. My parents even bought me a pair of handmade Dutch wooden shoes which were carved to fit me -- before my very eyes. I had (and sometimes wore) those shoes until I outgrew them. I wish I still had them.

- Talullah, Louisiana - Delta Village - Hobo Jungle
How about the train ride through Hobo Jungle and the 5 cents to watch a chicken peck corn on the small red piano, Tom Sawyer's Tree House? Also the small hand cranked train ride....

I visited this place several times as a child. They had a large slide that you rode down on a potato sack, and a "Crazy House" where things seemed to roll up-hill. They had an arcade where you could have a shootout with an automated gunslinger. My favorite part was the "wild west medicine show" that featured live performers.
I'm sure this place was third-rate at best, but to me, as a little boy growing up in Vicksburg, Mississippi, this place was just as magical as Disney World.
The only thing more exciting than the park itself was driving across the old Mississippi River Bridge in Aunt Marge's Impala. It was a two lane bridge with a railroad track. When there was heavy traffic and a freight train, it was truly scary.

Back in the early 70's when I was a kid. we once drove several hours from my grandparents' house in Mississippi to go to a Six Flags wannabe called "Delta Village" in Tallulah, Louisiana. The place had been advertised on television and the commercial made it look pretty good. When we got there, it turned out to have maybe a half-dozen rides, most of which were for little kids (I was eight or so at the time, so I'm talking about REALLY little kids here). The most impressive ride, which was prominently featured in the commercial, was the "log flume" which wasn't working at the time we visited. There was also a "story book land" area with fiberglass replicas of objects from various nursery rhymes, again shooting mostly for the preschool crowd. There was a show of some kind as well (it may have been a magic show but I don't really remember for sure) and some gift shops.
I don't know if Delta Village still exists; maybe one of your readers will have an update on the place.

Tipster Betty Guthrie confirms: "It was closed in the late 70's. There is nothing left -- just vacant land."
