Cars of Elvis and Liberace (Closed)
Tupelo, Mississippi
The Tupelo Automobile Museum displays over a hundred cars, but its two most famous vehicles once belonged to Las Vegas showstoppers Elvis Presley and Liberace.
Liberace's 1982 black "Barrister" Corvette was one of only seven made by California customizer George Barris. The extended body, multiple side pipes, and golden radiator grill were common to all seven, but the full-size candelabra bolted to the trunk is exclusively Liberace.
Elvis's car is far more sedate: an everyday royal blue Lincoln Mark IV bought from a dealership in 1976. Elvis gave the car to the policeman who oversaw Elvis's security, and the museum displays a blow-up of Elvis's check and a photo of him giving away the keys. The chains surrounding the car have motion sensors that trigger Elvis's voice if you get too close. Behind it, posters from Elvis's various movies have been arranged to spell a big ELVIS on the wall, enabling visitors to spot the car from anywhere in the warehouse-size museum.
