Free Speech Stump

Field review by the editors.

Weston, West Virginia

Eric Spelsberg had a big tree stump in his front yard between the sidewalk and the street. But this was in 2004 -- an election year -- and with all of the talk of stump speeches, Eric decided to use his stump as a monument to free speech instead of pulling it out.

He built a sturdy wood platform atop the stump, and a small set of stairs leading up to it. From the platform railing, facing the street, Eric has hung a large sign: "Free Speech Stump."

All are apparently welcome to pull over and exercise their First Amendment rights.
