Free Speech Stump (Gone)
Weston, West Virginia
Eric Spelsberg had a big tree stump in his front yard between the sidewalk and the street. But this was in 2004 -- an election year -- and with all of the talk of stump speeches, Eric decided to use his stump as a monument to free speech instead of pulling it out.
He built a sturdy wood platform atop the stump, and a small set of stairs leading up to it. From the platform railing, facing the street, Eric hung a large sign: "Free Speech Stump."
All are apparently welcome to pull over and exercise their First Amendment rights (though by 2015, the stump was reported completely rotted, its Free Speech career apparently over).
