Eyeball Seats
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The 1999 eyeball sculptures of artist Louise Bougeois help transform an otherwise sedate city lot into a nightmare scene straight out of a pharmaceutical TV ad landscape. Three sets of eyeballs stare out from Katz Plaza, where they serve as curvaceous seating (the eyeball benches were designed for this park, but have since been syndicated to surreal parks in a few other cities).
The eyeballs are arrayed in front of a fountain, a weird 25-ft.-high tower that resembles a Tower of Babel or a stack of meat, depending on how much the eyes have unhinged you. The water cascading down the tower is heated; while winter Pittsburgh freezes, this dream stays wet.
