Indian Head Rock, Miner's Castle
Munising, Michigan
Craggy sandstone cliffs stretch for more than 40 miles along the south shore of Lake Superior, presenting a relatively unvisited panorama of shapes that invite labeling. There's Indian Head Rock, which has fallen out of official favor as insensitive; and Chapel Rock broke in two several decades ago, leaving it a kind of medieval ruin. Miner's Castle seems pretty stable -- but the great thing about Pictured Rocks is that most of them are still available to be immortalized by a catchy name that sticks. Pompeii Porcupine, Dinosaurs Playing Poker, Bunyan's Commode, the Great Stone Reagan... all are at least possible with the right interplay of light and shadow.
