Mythical Guardian and Giant Penguin Made of Spoons (Gone)
Kent, Washington
The statues were made by welder-artists in the Green River College Welding Technologies program, using flatware, handlebars, and other recycled metal. A 10-foot-tall "dad" penguin (and a smaller four-foot-tall "son") were unveiled in 2016. In 2018 "The Guardian" arrived, standing over six feet high, resembling a mythical Griffin. It has feet with large claws, a dog-like head, horns like lightning bolts, and red wings that seem built for show, not flight. Spiky fur is made from forks, the tail from knives, while spoon-scales cover most of the body to make it smooth and safe for the public to touch.
