Stone Indian Head

Field review by the editors.

Fairview, Michigan

The Stone Indian Head is a novel, one-time departure for Tom Moran of Moran Iron Works, who has otherwise made his giant sculptures out of plate steel. This one is fashioned from local Michigan limestone, and was apparently inspired by the similar-looking Chief Leatherlips head in Ohio.

After the sculpture debuted in Onaway's July 4th parade in 2003, Tom donated it to a local foundation, which then gave it to the Michigan Magazine Museum (now the Skyline Event Center) in Fairview, which displays the head on its front lawn. The stainless steel feathers in the Indian's hair are still in good shape, but the limestone head now looks a bit moldy.
