Route 66 License Plate Mural
Moriarty, New Mexico
A group calling itself "Retro 66" raised money to fill the entire side of a semi-trailer with yellow, green, and black New Mexico license plates, arranged to make a map of Route 66 through the state, as well as spell out, "New Mexico Route 66 535 Miles." This is perplexing, since most maps suggest considerably fewer miles for Route 66 in New Mexico -- around 400 or so. Perhaps factoring in old alignments?
The map was originally supposed to sit at a former Route 66 gas station; when the location proved unworkable, it was moved outside the Lewis Antique Auto and Toy Museum in Moriarty.
Since it's on wheels, the map sometimes vanishes to make appearances at local parades and festivals.
