Witch Rock of Moll Dyer
Leonardtown, Maryland
Moll Dyer was accused of witchcraft and burned out of her house in February 1698. Her body was discovered in the woods several days later, with one hand raised -- possibly in a curse -- and the other frozen to a rock. The same locals who had burned her house now said that an imprint of her hand could be seen in the rock, and that anyone who placed their hand in the imprint would be doomed!
The rock was left untouched until 1972, when the town moved the 900-pound boulder next to its downtown old jail as a tourist attraction. Countless visitors recklessly placed their hands on the rock. Possibly feeling guilty, the town moved it again in February 2021, this time to a spot with a plexiglass shield over it, discouraging careless hands and curses.
