Steel Mobius of Speaker Foley
Washington, DC
Tom Foley spent three decades in the House of Representatives, including six years as majority whip and six years as speaker. Defeated for re-election in 1994 Foley then served as the U.S. ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2001.
In his later years he participated in Congressional Cemetery's off-leash K9 Corps program, walking his dog Jo Jo on the grounds each morning while his health allowed. He chose the cemetery as his final resting place, and his wife, Heather, took her husband's affinity for chrome into consideration when she decided upon a shiny, stainless steel Mobius monument to grace his plot. Made by sculptor Weqin Chen, the piece's official name is Endless Curve #4. It was installed in September 2020. Speaker Foley's ashes have not yet been interred at the cemetery, making his monument another of the graveyard's many cenotaphs (empty tombs).
