Big Green Adirondack Chair

The Big Green Adirondack Chairs were created by artist Joel Edward Sisson. They were part of a larger community building project started in a crack neighborhood in south Minneapolis, mentoring teenagers -- often labeled as gang members -- and providing them with job skills and employment. Six giant chairs were built and placed temporarily at locations across the Twin Cities. We then brought them to Washington, DC, for an art installation, and donated one to the Duke Ellington School for the Arts as a thank you to their students for helping us out.

The Chair Lords weren't with us on this road trip! The big green chair (and the property it sits on) is fenced off due to some major renovations. The school is scheduled to reopen in Fall 2016. Fingers crossed the chair still stands and isn't accidentally bulldozed over!

The green chair has been refurbished and is better than ever! It's on the grounds of the Duke Ellington High School for the Performing Arts. I'm not sure of the history of the chair, but it's been pleasing Washingtonians for years. About a year ago it was completely rebuilt and stands proudly near the entrance to the school.
