World War II Sub - U.S.S. Batfish

I was very impressed. I've worked at cape Canaveral sub base for 25 years on Trident II Subs and was glad I took the detour to see this. [joe houten, 08/25/2011]
USS Batfish. WW2 Sub - U.S.S. Batfish

We visited the U.S.S. Batfish in August 2009. The veterans' society that owns it was collecting donations for a paint job restoration. The Batfish was overwhelming and impressive, and even more so as one walks through the interior. The air conditioning was a huge plus.

I didn't know what to expect when I decided to visit the Batfish, but surprisingly, it was the major highlight of that road trip! [Jim Thoenen, 06/20/2010]

USS Batfish - Submarine

The USS Batfish is undergoing a re-dedication and re-discovery! The Batfish is now air conditioned.

Special events are also enhanced with WWII Living History re-enactors, who serve as members of the crew. This unique group lives on the submarine 24 hrs a day for an entire weekend every August for V-J Day recognition, allowing visitors a unique glimpse into the Batfish past, as they interact with crew members in period uniform portraying life aboard a submarine.

If you've seen the Batfish - come back and see her again. You haven't seen anything yet! New wartime paint scheme soon to be restored! [Bradley, 08/21/2008]

WWII Submarine - USS Batfish

The USS Batfish (SS-310) is an interesting exhibit, for those curious about history, since it is the champion American submarine of WWII. You have to drive through an area that looks like an industrial park, which may give you the impression that you are lost. The submarine is not air-conditioned, so it can be rather hot inside during the summer months. Even though the submarine is parked on dry land, you might want to bring along some water (to drink). [Darren Stout, 05/13/2001]

[RA: After launching in 1943, the Batfish sank three submarines and eleven other enemy ships. She served various other duties after World War II, retired for good in 1969. This may be the most "landlocked" of all subs on display in the US. Tipster David Hamrick notes: "The self-guided tour takes you the length of the main deck (sorry, no conning tower climbs) and is definitely not for the claustrophobic. Watch your head and step up to go through those hatches!"]
