Hutto Hippo Statues It was fun visiting Hutto. We drove around looking for the 100 Hippos. Was not able to see them all but we saw quite a few.

Hutto Hippo Statues About 100 concrete hippos are scattered throughout this community, including a large one in front of the high school. Apparently an escaped circus hippo in the early 20th century created quite a stir here. My favorite was a pair of hippos, with the girl in a yellow bikini.

Officially declared the "Hippo Capital of Texas" in 2003, Hutto planned at the time to order a 20 ft. tall hippo, the world's largest, as a tourism booster. Another big hippo is the high school mascot -- a cartoon version of a full-size one stands on East Street with its mouth yawning open. The legendary Hutto Hippo escaped from a circus train and waddled through town in the early 1900s.
