Oil Derrick Rest Stop Picnic Tables This was the first Roadside America stop on our three week family road trip and we were looking forward to having a picnic at the Oil Derrick Picnic tables. We pulled in and each table has its own parking spot.
Unfortunately, there was a car parked at each table and in each car sat a single older man who appeared to just be waiting. As we drove the circular path of the rest stop and passed each car, each man would look away. I'll leave it to your own conclusion as to why they were there, but suffice it to say, I would be careful about bringing your kids there. [M Schulze, 08/25/2010]
Oil Derrick Rest Stop Picnic Tables This small and quaint rest area with unique looking picnic tables is located just northeast of Tyler, TX on Interstate 20. The picnic shelters are made to look like classic oil derricks, which, at one time, was a pretty common site around Texas. I've passed this place numerous times in the past 37 years going back and forth from Shreveport, La to Dallas and never stopped here... until now, and they appear to have held up pretty well.
