Iowa's Sioux City built five temporary corn palaces, 1887-1891. Mitchell, SD came later, but built something more permanent.

I have a 1888 Sioux City corn palace billfold. It was once owned by my great uncle.

First Corn Palace - History

Sioux City did indeed have the first Corn Palaces. They were constructed only to stand for a few weeks before being razed. All five of the Corn Palaces put Mitchell's to shame. The first one was built in 1887 the last in 1891. Due to flood and depression, no Corn Palace was built in 1892. That was the year Mitchell constructed their first.

Did you know there was a corn palace in Sioux City, Iowa before there was one in Mitchell, SD? It was built and tore down every year by local farmers and merchants in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
