Naked Bookstore Owner
I regret to report that Paul Winer, the naked bookstore guy, died on May 7. There's a nice, long article about him in the May 15, 2019 issue of the Desert Messenger.
[Steve, 06/01/2019]Naked bookstore guy is sick. Fixing to have another surgery. Was told he only does occasional concerts nowadays. With his clothes on.

An update on Paul: he's still there and still naked. An EXTREMELY nice guy who also happily played a perfect pitch tune for us. A really great stop, and also the only time I got to go book shopping shirtless.

We found Paul Winer AKA Sweet Pie AKA Naked bookstore owner on the Roadside America app. He was so cool! We visited with him for an hour! If you're lucky enough, he will play the piano for you, along with singing a song! Thanks for putting him on your app or else we never would've met Paul.

"There's a naked man in Quartzsite! You have to see him!" That's what my friends kept telling me. Since my friends steer me to the most unique sights, I went to the naked guy's bookstore.
Yup, he was naked, except for a little crocheted "sock" over his privates. Nothing covered his backside. Fishing line held up the sock.
Besides being a free spirit, Paul is a really nice guy, an accomplished blues musician, and cartoonist. He's very approachable and will gladly pose for a photo (PS. Don't bring the kids.).

Paul spent the last 55 of his 75 years essentially nude. He said he had hypersensitive skin and that clothes bothered him. In 1964 he visited a nudist colony, but he found it boring because everyone was naked. So he decided to be naked in public. "Naked," he said, "is just the way I'm dressed."
