Cross of Lights.

Cross of Lights

For GPS: Excelsior Lutheran Church Cemetery. Beautiful at night -- would be even more epic at sunrise or sunset. Worth the pause to see in person and not driving by on I-70.

Cross of Lights

Set back a ways from the interstate and easy to miss during daylight, especially because of all the windmills. I imagine it's way more impressive at night with the lights on.

Lighted Cross

Untold thousands of drivers on Interstate 70 have driven by the Excelsior Lutheran Church, which is visible south of the highway. The church is situated on a small hill overlooking primarily wheat cropland. In the spring the little white church looks like a little white island in an ocean of green. In the summer it sets there in the middle of an ocean of waving golden wheat. It is always a pretty spot and picturesque. At night though is when the church really shines, literally. The 60-foot tall Lighted Cross is visible for miles, and appears as a cross from any direction due to its unique design.

[RS, 11/23/2014]

Built in 1976, the "cross" is actually an arrangement of lights on a skeletal tower. It's invisible during the day, especially now that several giant wind turbines, far larger than the cross, have been built between it and the interstate.
