Homesteader Emanuel Manis accidentally dug up a mastodon here in 1977. A weathered monument marks the spot on a dead-end rural road.

- From Sequim drive south on S. 3rd Ave. for 1.5 miles. Turn right onto Happy Valley Rd. Drive a half-mile. Turn left onto McFarland Drive. Drive a quarter-mile. Turn left onto Lester Way. Drive a quarter-mile. You'll see the small monument on the right.

The mastodon was accidentally unearthed in 1977 by homesteader Emanuel Manis as he was digging a trench with a backhoe. The animal had apparently collapsed on the spot and died of old age, but also showed evidence of being scavenged by early humans.
