Buried in the Middle of the Road

"Mountain" Tom Clark was a gang leader who terrorized the folks of Florence during and after the Civil War. He murdered 19 people including a child. He also bragged that "no one would run over Tom Clark." He was apprehended and thrown into the city jail. Then the people of Florence broke into the jail, dragged Clark out, and hung him from the closest tree. They already had Clark's grave dug in a nearby field, but he had so angered the townspeople that they buried him in the middle of the road.
