This tornado monument was constructed in 1997 during a week-long commemoration of the devastating tornado of 1947. During art classes, a group of young people, ages 7 through 18, constructed this metal likeness of the tornado that swept through their hometown fifty years earlier.

A rather whimsical sculpture when you consider it commemorates six fatalities of the May 31, 1947 Leedey, OK tornado. The twisted metal twister includes elements such as a cow skull, a rusty tricycle, and a cowboy boot. Christmas lights are another feature. Whether these are premature Christmas decoration or part of the actual piece, I do not know.
