I read in a Ticonderoga visitor pamphlet that locals honk when they drive by to keep the elephant from crossing the road. I witnessed this two times while visiting, and it scared the bejesus out of me. It's a scary road to walk on.
[Andrea Carlin, 09/24/2021]The first time I saw the Elephant Rock on my way to Vermont, I couldn't believe it. I stopped and took pictures. I thought it was remarkable; such a surprise out of nowhere.
Now I have a question: is this a public works piece? In Vermont there are a certain number of public artworks commissioned to artists and placed along the highway. I would really like to know who did this piece. Recently, in the summer of 2008, I passed it and realized the paint had been touched up.

We followed the directions from the earlier posting for Elephant Rock and it got us right there. This is in the middle of nowhere, but interesting. Be careful getting out of your car for pictures since it is located on a sharp curve in the road.

I thought I would send pictures of the elephant that was described on Roadside America. The original submitter was incorrect about the elephant being carved. I believe it is a natural rock formation that resembled an elephant to the one who painted the face on. It is quite unique, though, and I enjoyed seeing it and photographing it after finding it at RA!
[Lisa, 10/13/2005]There is a large rock alongside the road that is carved and painted like an elephant. I thought it was interesting when I saw it.
