Visitor Tips and News About Big Indian and Navajo Code Talker
The World War II "Navajo Code Talker" is always visible in front of the Gallup Cultural Center, along with a large sculpture of Navajo Chief Manuelito.[Wm Breiland, 07/30/2011]
This is a more modern style of a big Indian in Gallup, NM. It can be found at the entrance to the visitor center/rest stop on the north side of the highway from downtown Gallup. There is a park across the street with various interesting sculptures but my pictures didn't come out very good.[Judy Carter, 07/09/2003]
It's a 12-foot-tall statue of Chief Manuelito of the Navajo. A few feet away stands an equally tall statue of a Navajo Code Talker, dressed in his World War II Marine battle gear. July 2011: Photo added.
