First Official 4th of July Celebration
The first official 4th of July celebration was in 1783 in Salem (now Winston-Salem) at Salem Square. 1783 was the first Independence Day following the British withdrawal of their troops -- the first year that no city in the country was under British control or occupation on July 4th.
