Perinton, New York: Mushroom House

Eclectic private house, built in 1970, resembles giant mushrooms. The architect designed its five concrete stems and pods to suggest Queen Anne's Lace (wild carrots), but fans hallucinate shrooms.

The Mushroom House

Amazing!

[Brandy Sweet, 08/25/2023]

The Mushroom House, even when merely glimpsed through the trees, can enrapture onlookers. (Insert joke here about the mind-altering power of shrooms.)

Mushroom House

Way too cool house. I'd say it is much closer to Victor than Pittsford. Park Rd is the first right after Rt 96 exits Rt 490. This house is a must-see. True, a private home, but on a drive with several other homes so you can drive by for a closer look. Found online "Architect James H. Johnson actually patterned the house after a stem of Queen Anne's Lace. This home was built in 1970...The home's contemporary 'pod' design earned it a designation as a Perinton landmark in 1989."

Mushroom House

In Powder Mill Park, on Park Road, there is a house that is shaped like a group of mushrooms. It rises up out of mushroom stems planted in the side of the hill. They are currently for sale. Powder Mill Park is located outside of Rochester, near Victor. I am not sure of the actual town, maybe Pittsford, Bushnells Basin, perinton or Victor (all right in that general area) but this was a big attraction for us when we were kids. I take my children there now. You have to look at the house from the road, it is private property, but you can see them well, especially in the fall.
