Almost 40 feet tall and weighing over 300 tons, this tilted-by-design sculpture did not provide a single drop to fight fires. It was the largest of three contenders for the biggest fireplug title -- until it was taken down on February 23, 2023.

- Downtown. Either I-77 exit onto Forest Drive, which turns into Taylor St.; or I-26 to I-126, which turns into Elmwood Ave., then a quick right on Marion and five blocks south to Taylor. Center of Taylor between Bull and Marion Sts, in the AgFirst Farm Credit Bank parking lot, near Palmetto Medical Center.

- On a freestanding brick pillar next to the flagpoles outside the Richland County administration building. On the west side of Harden St. just south of its intersection with Hampton St.
This eight-foot-high mechanical gong is diagonal from the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center at the corner of Senate and Lincoln Streets. The plaque reads: "For 30 years, Marvin Chernoff, head of Columbia's Chernoff/Silver Advertising Agency, sounded a going to celebrate creative excellence, big ideas, and success. Turn the handle, ring this gong, and signal your own success!"

Definitely a blink and you'll miss it kind-of-sight, this is one of four panels on a pleasantly out-of-place art installation at a county building. They surround a little brick plaza with benches and (what might have once been) a fountain in the middle. Not what I was expecting, but not disappointing either.

A Martian head with antennae was sculpted out of bricks by high school student Corey Gochenour in 2000.

The Gong was built as a tribute to Chernoff shortly after his death in 2015. His agency, in its quest for pubic relations, was known for writing musical comedies and once baked the world's largest cake.
