Actually the monument was originally a mile south, but had to be moved due to subsidence from sulphur mining. It was moved in the '60s and again to the present location in 1978.

[Kim, 12/13/2010]- Beaumont, Texas - Gusher Monument and Replica Oil Boomtown
You can see the gusher from Hwy 69. It is very close to Lamar University -- actually Lamar owns it now. Great photo opportunities as well, especially in front of the saloon.
[Kim, 02/21/2010] The Replica Oil Boomtown has been closed for repairs following 2005's Hurricane Rita. But beginning April 7, 2007, its replica oil gusher will blow at 2:30 PM, and will do so on the first Saturday of each month for the rest of the year. Viewing is free. According to a press release, the gusher "is also available to blow for private groups by appointment." Interested parties can call 409-835-0823.
[RoadsideAmerica.com Team, 04/06/2007]The museum was dedicated on Jan 10, 1990. The lower floor covers all aspects of oil production, including locating, drilling, capturing, and refining. The upper floor contains oil memorabilia to such as old gas pumps and station signs, and several early model transport vehicles. A very nice museum, so worthy of a visit.
