In a peaceful cemetery in the heart of Newton you will find a unique memorial. It was the entrance to a cave at one point. According to legend, it seals the cave entrance where the three children inscribed into the memorial died.
[Joey Storms, 05/04/2024]The story goes that two of the three kids entered the cave searching for the third one and none of them returned, so the entrance was sealed with their memorial slab. We'd heard sketchy tales decades ago of "Hessian gold" buried in a Newton cemetery cave, and that it might connect to another hazardous cave entrance miles away (and now also sealed after someone trapped in the cave died).

This was hard work. You need a strong back, and a regular shovel (def not a spade)! The dirt is hard, need to dig at least a foot deep. Don't forget a wagon; buckets of dirt and gravel are very heavy. You can take your dog on a leash. We stayed at Queen of Diamonds Inn -- very clean and comfortable. There is a place across the street that will explain the mining process and rent everything you need for only $30. Very helpful and kind.

The Pirates Keep offers strange items for sale, and a museum to walk through.
[Mike Jennings, 05/03/2024]Formerly Hobo Junction, this long-term trash-n-treasure shop has become more satisfyingly cluttered with time. Odd home-built statues and sculptures add to the claustrophobic decor.
