Swiss Trail Muffler Man
Lake Vanare, New York
The "Swiss Trail" Muffler Man is barely visible, hoisted on a hillside among thick foliage. We were looking, and we missed the first time by...
He's propped against a tree to hide his missing right arm (and more recently, his head). According to the owners, he was once the woodsman mascot of a campground, before he was shanghaied by hooligans in the 1970s. They tossed him onto a lumber truck, drove down to nearby Lake Luzerne and threw him in.
The next day, his head was visible sticking out of the water. During the incident, he lost the arm.
The owners don't have any plans to repair him, and claimed that Hershey's wanted to pay them $5,000 to feature the M-Man in a commercial, "but they never came back." Not right for the Brand image after all? We told them Muffler Men now sell for as much as $17,000.
They looked at us. "Heck, we'd sell it to you for fifteen hundred."
Or maybe he'll just stay where he is.
